From it’s inception at an art show “CryptoZoo” back in 2006, Cryptonauts.com has become the seedbed for fun plushie cuddly monsters which have cultural references of asian and mexican pop expressionism. Having been born in Mexico and raised in both Texas and Hawai‘i, Aaron’s work is largely influenced by his childhood experiences. From playing with mexican wresting action figures to Japanese toy monsters, Aaron has been crafting his vision of hidden meanings through plushie toys ever since he stitched his first cryptonaut.
The reason I sew and make stuffed creatures is simply because I enjoy the entire process of creating something with nothing more than fabric and my own imagination. My goal is to create work that stimulates one’s cherished childhood experiences. A time when our innocence was untouched by the stresses of an adult life. Whether or not people experience that nostalgia is up to the viewer, however, what is important is that people take what they will from my work, hopefully a smile.
